My work was throwing away a bunch of old phones after people upgraded~ Going through the box I found a XV6600. I've never had a smartphone before, so I decided to keep it and check out all the features it had. I was pretty blown away with everything it had. However I already have a phone plan and don't think I'd make use of a $80/month smartphone plan from Verizon. I hav an old verizon phone that I would like to activate on INPULSE.does any1 have the self directions to do this that is included in the packages with all ot. Verizon INpulse Prepaid Cell Phone Refill Airtime Minutes Online at CallingMart.com. I'm just wondering if there's a way to buy a prepaid plan and use it with the XV6600? That way I could check out all of the features and decide if I really want to switch to this as a primary. After looking around a bit. It doesn't look like prepaid plans are possible for the XV6600. *Please* correct me if there is a way~ So I suppose the closest solution to checking out some of the features would be getting a Wifi SDIO. Is the card worth it, or is it pretty weak as far as signal goes? ![]() If I have to be standing a few feet from the router to get a decent connection, I probably will just pass on the deal. Might just stick with using the phone as a PDA or perhaps just sell it. Of course after using even the simplest features such as sync for Outlook.I don't know if I could live without it. I suppose if anything it's helped me understand why somebody would spend $500+ on a phone. (: Updates in Blue) Hey there. My issue has been this: due to some credit issues, Verizon wanted me to put down like $400 to secure a contract with them. I found this unreasonable, so I've just been using the XV6600 as a straight PDA, with no connectivity (except my wifi card). I've attempted to get a Pre-pay option on this phone before. It seemed like a no-brainer, but nobody in customer service could help me. After reading this thread, I found a way to do it. Basically, there are two Pre-Pay plans at Verizon: the InPulse Plan, and the EasyPay plan. - InPulse is a bit of a ripoff, as you get dinged for $.99 a day, even if you don't use the phone - so at a minimum, you'll spend $30 a month, and that's not including the $.10 per minute talk time. - The EasyPay plan is a little better - a choice of either $50 a month (350 minutes) or $70 (700 minutes). That's a flat rate, with no per-minute charge or daily $.99 charge. Web access for either of these plans will cost you $.99 for a 24 hour period. Now, if you go to Verizon's site and click on PrePay, it will take you to a screen that shows both options, and at the bottom you choose the one you want. The next screen, however, then asks for the number of your phone, in addition to some other info (name, address, etc). I didn't have a number, as this phone hasn't been active in some time, and it was a required field. Then I got to thinking about online activation. So I poked around a bit, and found a place to activate your new InPulse phone (thus assigning a phone number in the process). In point of fact, any Verizon phone that can do CDMA (with the exception of the Thera/2032, due to a lack of E911 capabilities) can be activated as an 'InPulse' phone. STEP 1: This is the 'backdoor' link I've found that will allow those of you without phone service to get connectivity again: (Update:: New page link) Be sure to look for the 'Activate Now' link on the right side of the page. ![]() ![]() ![]() STEP 2: Once you go through entering your info, it tells you to wait a minute, then gives you your new phone number and tells you to dial *228 to program it. In the case of the XV6600, you actually want to dial *22899, which will both program the phone and pull down the latest PRL. STEP 3: Now, what you've just done is activate your phone on the InPulse plan. The problem is, I think it's a huge ripoff, as it charges you even on days you don't use it. On the Verizon Prepay page, they used to offer you a choice of either the InPulse plan, or EasyPay. (Update: Checking today,, they only seem to offer InPulse. But I still actively use EasyPay. So try calling the number below and seeing if they will switch you over. It really is a better deal.)In this case, I wanted to go to the EasyPay $50 plan. So, I called customer service, who transferred me to PrePay customer service, and they switched me over. The direct number I was given is 888-294-6804. Enter your number and ignore the menu options: just press zero. Explain that you've just activated your phone, but it seems to be on the InPulse plan, and you wanted to change to the EasyPay plan. Note that you might get a CSR who will give you grief because 'This phone shouldn't really be on the PrePay plan.' Or some garbage. Just say nevermind, and call back to speak to someone else. Aditionally, from now until, if you activate your XV6600 'InPulse' phone, they will give you a $10 credit as well. My phone was up and working in minutes. (Update:: This may or may not still apply) And here's the kicker: your XV6600 now has phone access, and full EVDO web access, for $50 per month! Given that the minimum that Verizon charges for a combo voice/data plan is $79, you stand to save $30 a month, and with no contract! Now granted, the web access fee is $.99 a day. But consider this. If you did use the web every day of the month, you'd break even at $80 in charges. But let's say you only used it on business days. You'll still save $8 - $10 a month by not accessing the web on the weekends. So that's how to activate you XV6600 if you, like me, have credit issues and can't get a wireless contract. Let me know if this helps anyone. Yeah, I guess it seems a bit sneaky. But hey, they provide the tools, and I didn't see anything that said I couldn't do it. Activating the old Simon phone - that would be a blast! I would LOVe to find one of those old, old style brick phones with the giant stubby antenna's and somehow get it activated. How funny would that be? 'Hold on baby, I need to answer this.' (takes giant phone out of briefcase to impress date). One of my favorite cell phone gags of all time is from the animated show Dr. Somebody is making fun of him for being stuck in the past, which he denies, but then asks: 'Um. Am I the only one who is still using a rotary cell-phone?' I love that gag. Overall everything seems to be working great. One issue I do have is I can't seem to call the number from my house/landline phone. It gives me the operator message that I believe is default for long distance calls 'Please put a 1 or 0 before the number'. I know other people in my area have no problem calling it, it just seems to be my landline number that's affected. I may have made the mistake of calling a CSR at Verizon to see if they could help. While talking about it for a minute or so she said 'Oh!! I can't offer you any support at all. This is a PDA phone and you weren't supposed to get prepay on it'~ So, hopefully she doesn't do anything drastic like close my account already. Edit---- Ok I believe I found out the problem, I think they *did* give me a long distance number. Before the CSR ended the call, she did mention that the number located in Odessa, MO (Which I thought was strange considering I choice Kansas City, MO). It's only about 30minutes from where I live, but I guess it must be right on the edge of the coverage or something. I just tried to call a bunch of businesses located in Odessa to test my theory. All of them gave me an error message saying the call couldn't be completed (didn't even tell me to dial a 1~). I then called some of the numbers on my cell phone and it went through fine. The people that have been able to call me so far have all been using cell phones, so it probably wasn't long distance for them. I'm not too sure if they had an option for Kansas City, KS or anything else with an 816 area code. I'm not even too sure if I'd be able to get them to change the number even if something else was available. I obviously can't use this phone if people on landlines can't call me. Guess I'm glad I didn't jump the gun and put a bunch of money into a prepay plan. Gare_NY great GARE got activated but cannot get on web with xv6600 on impluse any idea how to set up dun or other will be switching to ezpay olan but want to try web access before thanks. It gets better. I think this may have already been mentioned but: I'm not getting charged the $.99 per day for using the web! I beleive the reason to be this: when you buy one of Verizon's pre-pay phones (technically, you're only supposed to be able to do pre-pay with a few of their phones), you have to activate it, then you can use it as a normal cell phone. However, if you want to access the web, my understanding is that you need to dial some 3 or 4 digit code/number to start up web access. Obviously, for the 6600, this isn't necessary, as we have a dedicated web browser and always-on access to EVDO/1XRTT. Verizon must be filtering the pre-pay callers based on if they punch in the 'web access code' on their keypads. If you don't punch it in, you don't get charged. I have the fully functional voice/data plan, but I only pay $50 per month, and I have no contract/no ETF. I can just stop paying any time. For those of you who might have contracts coming due, keep this in mind. (: Updates in Blue) (Update: Checking today,, they only seem to offer InPulse. But I still actively use EasyPay. So try calling the number below and seeing if they will switch you over. It really is a better deal.)Gare_NY Update - I called into customer service this past weekend because I found that I wasn't utilizing all of my available minutes each month on the EasyPay plan. When I travelled a lot, I used them all. Again, there were two different forms of Pre-paid service: Inpulse, and Easy-Pay. Inpulse would charge you a dolalr a day, even if you didn't use it. Easy-Pay was more of a flat-rate thing. In any event, Inpulse now has three options: Core, Plus, and Power. They have their various differences of course, notably the daily charge. However, they've modified Inpulse so that you're only charged on the days you use it. There is still the option for Inpulse Classic as well, but it's identical to Core, except that it charges every day, even when not used (whish is pretty much a rip off). My original thought was to switch to Core. But then the CSR informed me that once I go off of EasyPay (which I think for the most part is the better deal), you can't get it back. They've done away with it, and I'm grandfathered in since I've had it for the last year or so. I decided to keep it for now and see just keep an eye on my usage. I suspect I might change some day, but for now, EasyPay works for me. Long story short: EasyPay is no longer available for new activations. So, unfortunately they ARE checking ESNs against phone models. I just tried to follow your directions, and like dot, I got instructions to call the 877 number. That was fun, given that I had to mangle my way through a phone tree on an already activated pre-pay phone. Called up, gave me a song and dance about how putting prepay on my phone would result in breaking the phone's other features. Tried to get me to sign up for a data plan. I explained that I worked at a University and already had access to 'them datas' (swear to God, her words, not mine) and that I only wanted prepay voice access on a phone I might use no more than 5 times in a month. The computer 'wouldn't let her do that' but if I could 'figure out a way to get it to activate it online, (she) couldn't stop (me).' She correctly identified my make and model. Of course, the method of trying to activate it online isn't working via the link you sent. ESN Dec and Hex both return the same 'please call customer service' message. I am, unfortunately, at an impasse. Wish I had a better idea. How to activate Kaspersky 2009 the easy way. No keys necessary, First off download either KIS or KAV from the Kaspersky web site. Once installed and it asks you to register, skip through this section. After the computer has rebooted load up Kaspersky, click on 'Settings' and go down to 'Options' and un-check 'Enable Self-Defence'. Now disable Kaspersky and exit the program. Next run regedit Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Wow6432Node KasperskyLab protected AVP8 environment Scroll down to Product Status and change from 'Release' to 'Beta' Exit regedit and reload Kaspersky, you'll notice that when you goto the area where you normally input your key you now have an option to 'Activate Beta Version'. Click this and you'll get a 30 day BETA trial, the great thing is you can just redo this time and again, so 30 days later just do the same thing. Basically what you've done here is fool the Kaspersky server into thinking your using the BETA version of the product when infact your actually using the Release version that will give you all the updates etc like a full release. No more keys I am using Windows vista so I don't know if the above registry location is different to XP. Besides, OEM computer products preinstalled in factory is protected with System Locked Preinstallation (SLP 2.0) where BIOS is included with signed Windows Marker and SLIC table for instant activation. Configuring the computer as a KMS host • Install your KMS host key by typing it in the text box, and then click Commit (Figure 7). Installing your KMS host key • If asked to confirm replacement of an existing key, click Yes. • After the product key is installed, you must activate it. Click Next (Figure 8). Activating the software The KMS key can be activated online or by phone. See Figure 9. Choosing to activate online Now that the KMS host is configured, it will begin to listen for activation requests. However, it will not activate clients successfully until the activation threshold is met. Verifying the configuration of Key Management Service You can verify KMS volume activation from the KMS host server or from the client computer. KMS volume activation requires a minimum threshold of 25 computers before activation requests will be processed. The verification process described here will increment the activation count each time a client computer contacts the KMS host, but unless the activation threshold is reached, the verification will take the form of an error message rather than a confirmation message. Note If you configured Active Directory-based activation before configuring KMS activation, you must use a client computer that will not first try to activate itself by using Active Directory-based activation. You could use a workgroup computer that is not joined to a domain or a computer running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. To verify that KMS volume activation works, complete the following steps: • On the KMS host, open the event log and confirm that DNS publishing is successful. • On a client computer, open a Command Prompt window, type Slmgr.vbs /ato, and then press ENTER. The /ato command causes the operating system to attempt activation by using whichever key has been installed in the operating system. The response should show the license state and detailed Windows version information. • On a client computer or the KMS host, open an elevated Command Prompt window, type Slmgr /dlv, and then press ENTER. The /dlv command displays the detailed licensing information. The response should return an error that states that the KMS activation count is too low. This confirms that KMS is functioning correctly, even though the client has not been activated. For more information about the use and syntax of slmgr.vbs, see. I just received my iPhone 6+, and I'm trying to get the SIM card registered so I can use my phone. In the past, I thought it was all done. ![]() ![]() Potential customers can see if their Nexus 6 or iPhone is compatible with the program by heading to. First you must enter your device ID, such as an ESN, IMEI, or MEID, and then you will be taken to a webpage that prompts you to input your SIM ID number or to purchase a new SIM card from a Verizon store. Once you do that, Verizon will show you the plans for which your device is eligible and allow you to activate it. Verizon’s likely end-goal by allowing other carrier’s devices to be activated on its network is to get users onto its network and ensure that all of their future device purchases are of Verizon-branded variants. Not having to buy a new device obviously makes the idea of switching to Verizon a lot more appealing to most users. Earlier this month, Verizon killed device. Instead of having the cost of their device subsidized, Verizon users now must pay for their smartphones in monthly installments or purchase them outright. If you were to bring a non-Verizon device to the carrier as part of this new program, you would fall into the latter category and would only have to pay for service every month. You can check to see if your device is eligible to be activated on Verizon’s network. The article may be a little incomplete, but not misleading, in my opinion. Yes, the device must include the same network technology, but many non-Verizon phones contain technology for multiple carriers (including Verizon’s CDMA) now. My wife’s iPhone 6, originally bought as an “ATT/GSM” phone in late 2014 and my iPhone 6+ (bought from Apple in Jan 2015 as a SIM-free phone) both will work on Verizon’s network according to Verizon’s online device check tool. Both of these iPhones contain GSM and CDMA technology, in addition to LTE, of course. Older iPhones might not work, but most newer iPhones do. In recent years Apple has managed to include multi-carrier technology in all of its iPhones. This is a very good thing, as it thwarts carriers’ ability to capture and lock in customers and to lock out non-Verizon phones (steering you to buy Verizon-only phones). For your next phone purchase, I recommend avoiding carrier-specific phones. Contrary to snarky comments (posted nearby), it is not readily apparent which iPhones might be compatible with multiple carriers. Most recent iPhones are (even non-Verizon iPhones). Two factors contribute to this. First, the industry is moving to LTE. Eventually this will make the CDMA vs. GSM incompatibility moot, although Verizon’s and Sprint’s backup voice capability will be an issue for a limited time. Second, Apple has sufficient marketing clout to mandate that the carriers (particularly Verizon) accept phones that have all capabilities – CDMA, GSM and LTE with all the necessary frequency bands. In the past, Verizon would not allow “non-Verizon” phones on its network, even if the phones were technically capable of supporting the CDMA technology. Regrettably, Sprint apparently continues to lock phones to its network. For many years it was possible for Verizon to effectively capture customers by requiring certain technology (CDMA) and by not allowing other phones on its network. Now that plan is falling apart. Eventually we should all be able to buy our phones anywhere we want and freely move between carriers. It should have been this way all along. Better late than never. There are other negative consequences of these old carrier-specific hardware requirements. Verizon’s entire line of Android phones quickly became obsolete because the phone manufacturers could not freely update the Android software and firmware for the phones without Verizon’s consent and input. Contrast this with Apple’s ability to freely update IOS. I would discourage anyone from buying a phone that is, or could be, locked to a specific carrier and to avoid any carrier that locks in customers’ phones. ![]() Don’t buy a carrier-branded phone. Simultaneous voice and data is supposed to be supported by properly-implemented VoLTE, Voice over LTE. VoLTE is supported on the iPhone 6 and 6+. If that has been enabled by Verizon in your area, you should be able to have simultaneous voice and data. In your iPhone settings under, enable Cellular Data. Under make sure that is selected. It could be that VoLTE has not been activated by Verizon in your area yet. AT&T, TMobile and Verizon all have announced support for VoLTE, so it’s only a matter of time until this is widely available. I would be skeptical of the Verizon’s rep’s simplistic answer. In the meantime, be glad that your iPhone 6 can be used on multiple networks. If you avoid carrier contracts, you can switch networks whenever you want. @ Delvi – replying to your comment that the service works now despite Verizon’s earlier refusal. I’m not surprised. For many years Verizon has managed to lock out “non-Verizon” phones and to lock in customers with carrier-specific phones and contracts, so it’s no surprise that Verizon reps would automatically revert to the old “you have to have a Verizon phone” response. With the worldwide deployment of LTE (and other factors such as Apple and Google making near-universal phones), Verizon will no longer be able to do this. Be very glad that you bought an iPhone and not a carrier-specific phone. Verizon has a problem with core values and veracity. Click to expand. The first link is a problem somebody had with a PRL update in 2002. Many of us travelers have been doing it once a month or so for years. For over seven years, in my case. The second link you cited is Verizon telling you to do a PRL update: 'You SHOULD; occasionally update your Preferred Roaming list, From your HOME AREA or another VZW coverage area'. It does say not to do it from an extended network area. In my experience, *288 from an extended network area simply fails. You don't have to 'know exactly what you are doing'. Just dial it and follow the instructions. BTW, you can bypass the menus by dialing *28899. PRL updates are very important if you travel away from your home tower. Dave, I stand corrected - it does look like it is both easy and safe. I did it on my phone, (both menu option 1 and 2), and it appears to only affect the PRL. In your particular situation - traveling (and possibly in rural areas with Mom n' Pop cell systems), it might have some benefit periodically as Verizon adds or drops roaming partners. I don't know how often that actually occurs in any given region though. It might well be that if you see a new PRL # after an update, it means that something changed with one of Verizon's roaming partners in Idaho - but that has no practical significance if you are in any of the other 49 states. (Point is, just because you see a new PRL #, it doesn't mean anything changed about roaming partners in your area.) The OP was pretty enthusiastic about how it dramatically affected his service, and there is plenty of mis-information on the internet ( see my post above for instance ) - but it should be important to point out that *228 (option 2) only affects roaming, not Verizon's own network. If the OP truly got better service, his phone must have started roaming immediately after the PRL update. Either that or there is some sort of odd behavior which can happen if a mobile handset thinks another carrier's network is in it's (outdated) PRL, and the handset is in an area with overlapping cells from both Verizon and the other carrier. That seems hard to believe, though. Thanks for correcting me. Click to expand. It is highly probable that the VZW Tech who activated your phone in the store already did an 'option 1'. I suppose that there could be regional differences in that information that depend on the location of the cell that serves the handset when *228 (option 1) is selected, but that would probably only apply to folks who mail-ordered their phone, or purchased it in a store a long distance from where they use it. In any event, the OP mentioned only option 2 - which is only about PRL. Perhaps the VZW tech was using that advice as a kind of placebo - you know. 'maybe if I throw the customer a bone, he'll stop gnawing on my leg' eu1. For voice, I think that's true, but for data it can mean the difference between connecting to an Extended Network (i.e., non-Verizon) tower at a max of 144 kbps and connecting to a Verizon tower at EVDO speeds--around 800 kbps to 2+ Mbps. In the years that I have been following (and moderating) forums related to cellular Internet connections, I have seen many instances of a PRL update switching a user from a slow 1x connection to a fast EVDO connection. These are almost always RVers, moving around the country, as you suggest. Unfortunately, you can't do a PRL update once you wander into an Extended Network. I'm pretty certain that it is exactly what the Verizon tech does in the store when they set up a brand new phone. After that, it is not apparent that any of the information ever changes. (That is, it may not need to be done more than once in the life of the phone, assuming you don't change carriers.) Anybody that knows of an online Verizon document that says that this should be done with any regularity, or even more than once - post up the link! You are exactly right. The Verizon Rep scans your phone box to get the ESN number from your phone in order to associate that phone with your current number or new number that they have set up. Option #1 simply tells Verizon that your phone is ready to be used by you. You may have to use that feature if you decide to change phones on your own. For instance, if you happen to drop your Eris in water and you are forced to grab your old phone while you figure out what to do, you will call Verizon and tell them the ESN off of your old phone and they will then tell you to call *228 option 1 to activate your phone. Software updates for the Eris will be sent to us automatically and I'm not sure about a hardware update. With my Omnia, Samsung issued a firmware upgrade and customers had to either take the phone in to let Verizon do it or download a file and program to do it at home. I came across your post regarding *228 after calling vzw for tech support. My wife has had her Droid X for 16 months and has been having issues for the past couple months. Her issues were: lagging when going from screen to screen, freezing inside and outside of apps, static on the phone line, noise on the phone line getting quiet and loud whenever it feels the need. Also she has been having battery issues. I was told to do *228 option 1 as it hadn't been done in 7 months. I specifically asked the vzw rep what option 1 programs and all she could say was, the phone. Great.thanks for the support. The amazing thing is little option 1 fixed everything. I am not sure what it programs still but it fixed all sorts of bugs. I hope it helps her battery life but I don't know that yet. Hope this helps. If you haven't done it yet, go ahead and try. She said it should be done before calling verizon for help. Tip: if you have a 4g phone, NEVER DO *228. It will fry your sim. |
